KASAUTI is an independent think tank for ideas, research, education and community development — founded in the community whose craft gave the word its meaning.
The name
For centuries, goldsmiths have tested gold on the kasauti — the touchstone. Metal is streaked across black stone and the mark is read against needles of known purity. The stone has no opinion. It simply shows what is true.
That discipline belongs to the goldsmith communities of India — the Soni / Swarnkar / Sonar tradition — who for generations accepted nothing as pure until it was tested. KASAUTI carries their instrument into the work of ideas: one craft’s standard of proof, offered to all.

We hold the method, the charter and the standards; each community initiative that registers with KASAUTI applies them to its own upliftment. We build evidence bases, run measured pilots in education, skills, leadership and enterprise, and scale only what works.

What KASAUTI is not
An institution is defined as much by what it refuses to become.

- A place where opinion becomes “policy” without evidence
The founder
KASAUTI is founded by Surya Prakash Soni (सूर्य प्रकाश सोनी) — an IT professional and entrepreneur based in Melbourne, Australia; Rajasthani by root, Swarnkar by community, and a community-builder by long habit.
Community leadership has been a constant thread of his years in Australia. As a past President of the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV) — the peak body of Indian community organisations in the state — he brought organisations spanning many languages, regions and backgrounds onto one platform, worked with state and federal governments and the Indian consulate, and led India in Victoria (2024), a celebration that drew some three thousand people. He is a past President of Rajasthani Kutumb of Victoria, which keeps migrant Rajasthani families connected to their culture, language and traditions, and a member of the Rajasthan Foundation’s Melbourne chapter. In Australia he also founded VICHAR, the webinar and dialogue series that now becomes KASAUTI’s founding programme.
Those years settled the conviction KASAUTI is built on: a community’s greatest wealth is not its money but its people — their knowledge, skills, experience and relationships. Three questions drive the work. Should any talented child in the community fall behind purely for lack of support? Can the goldsmith heritage be carried forward with modern knowledge and modern respect? And can we build institutions, not just events — platforms that serve the community long after their founders?

In keeping with KASAUTI’s own charter, the founder’s role is designed to be handed over — term limits, succession and the independence safeguards apply to him first.
Independence & governance
KASAUTI is being established as an independent Australian not-for-profit — a public company limited by guarantee, with charity registration to follow as advised. The design locks independence in four ways: constitutional purposes and term limits; funding rules that cap any single donor and bar donor influence over findings; a research-committee firewall so that neither funders nor the board vet conclusions; and succession designed from day one, so the institution outlives its founder.
KASAUTI works with community institutions in India and Australia as partners — never as owners. Community initiatives register with KASAUTI for governance and standards; field delivery belongs to each community’s own institutions. Founding partnerships are being formalised and will be announced with the founding charter.
The real authority of a think tank comes not from registration papers but from the quality of its research, the credibility of its people, transparent methodology and measurable results. That is the standard KASAUTI asks to be judged by — the draft charter puts it in writing.
